Threads we're watching
Ongoing city hall stories from our coverage — the threads that run through this room.
The plate readers and the missing data
The city is expanding to 32 Flock cameras while NLRPD has published none of the traffic-stop data a 2025 state law requires every six months. Mayor Hartwick says the policy is being rewritten to include regular audits — the council is where that accountability lands.
The old central fire station's second life
In July the council cleared Loblolly Creamery to negotiate a possible $825,000 purchase of the former central fire station at 723 Maple St. Any deal would come back through this room.
The police overtime audit
Forvis Mazars is auditing NLRPD timekeeping after a report found the city paid for off-duty overtime hours never worked and misbilled companies for officers' side work. Findings and any fixes land in front of the council.
After the Dickey-Stephens vote
The 20-year Travelers lease passed 5–2 on Aug. 10. Implementation details — and whatever the two no votes were worried about — are worth tracking.
Four-way race for Ward 2
Linda Robinson's open seat draws four candidates this November. Council meetings between now and then double as auditions.
The recap
Updated Tuesday, Aug. 25. The council held its regular fourth-Monday session last night. As of Tuesday afternoon no local outlet had published a report from the chamber, and the city's official minutes typically post to the council archives after approval at the next session (Sept. 14). The replay airs on the city's Facebook page and cable channels 11 (Comcast) / 99 (U-Verse). This page updates as the record posts.
Where the threads we're tracking stood going in:
- The old central fire station. On July 28 the council authorized a non-binding letter of intent with Loblolly Creamery for an $825,000 purchase, opening a 90-day due-diligence window that runs into late October — any final sale comes back to the council. (Democrat-Gazette, Jul 28)
- The police overtime audit. Forvis Mazars' review of NLRPD timekeeping continues per the Democrat-Gazette's reporting; findings land in front of this council.
- The plate readers. Going into the meeting, NLRPD had published none of the traffic-stop data a 2025 state law requires, and Mayor Hartwick said the policy is being rewritten to add regular audits. (Democrat-Gazette, Aug 23)
